AVAS - Au Ver a Soie 7-strand silk

8" x 8" piece 24-count congress cloth

You could also work this design on a 10" x 10" piece of 18-count mono canvas, but you would need to use more strands of stitching threads to cover the canvas.

Master Chart

Large Center Cross

Using three strands of Color A, stitch each arm of this large cross in fern stitch variation. You can control the variegation and match up all four arms of this cross because Waterlillies is a 12-stranded silk. Make sure you begin at the same spot on the silk for each arm and you can control the variegation. Carefully follow the numbering on the chart. Notice that the last two stitches for each arm are diagonal gobelins rather than fern stitches.

Metallic Center

Using one strand of Color E, place four diagonal gobelin stitches so that they all share in the center hole. Then, wrap the base like a whipped spider stitch for three revolutions. When wrapping a whipped spider bring your needle to the surface of the canvas very near the center of the spider. Slide under the first diagonal gobelin and wrap around it and proceed to the next working in a circular fashion around the center hole till you have wrapped each diagonal gobelin three times.

Diamond-Shaped Areas at Ends of Cross

Using one strand of Color E, work the vertical multiple cross in the center of this diamond. The diamond is 12 x12 threads and the multiple cross is 10 threads high, so point 1 is one thread up from the bottom of the diamond.

The crescent is worked in Colors B, C, and D:

Using three strands of Color B, work stitches 1 - 2 and 3 - 4.

Using three strands of Color D, work stitches 5 - 6 and 7 - 8.
Using three strands of Color C, work stitches 9 - 10 and 11 - 12.

Using one strand of Color E, outline the diamond with four diagonal gobelin stitches.

Inner Small Square

Using one strand of Color E, stitch this area in a Rhodes stitch. Pay close attention to numbering.

Inner Large Square

Using one strand of Color E, stitch the diagonal multiple cross in this square. The square is eight threads by eight threads and the diagonal multiple cross is six threads long so point 1 of the multiple cross is diagonally up one thread from the lower right corner of the square.

Using three strands of Color D, stitch the right angle crescents on either side of the diagonal multiple cross. Remember all subsequent stitches pass over previous stitches.

Outer Large Square

These are the same stitches that were used in Area 5.

Using one strand of Color E, work the same diagonal multiple cross here.

Using three strands of Color C, work the two right angle crescents here.

Outer Small Square

Using one strand of Color E work the same Rhodes here as in the Inner Small Square.

Border of Inner Large Square

Using three strands of Color B, work this area in the long-armed cross variation. I have charted the whole area for you. I have charted the left border. The right border is a mirror image of the left border.

Border of Outer Large Square

Using three strands of Color B, work this area in the traditional long-armed cross. I have charted the whole area for you. I have charted the left border. The right border is a mirror image of the left.

Border of the Outer Small Square

Using three strands of Color A, stitch this border in diagonal gobelin. Follow chart.

Background

Using two strands of Color F, work the background in mosaic stitch. The slant of the mosaic changes for each quadrant. The slant points toward the middle of the side.

Border

Using three strands of Color A, stitch the corners in Smyrna crosses. Using the same thread, stitch the borders in traditional long-armed cross.
