Pulled Thread Butterflies on Canvas
by Barbara Ewbank

Cleopatra, considered to be one of the most beautiful women in history, may have adorned herself with what we call "pulled thread" work. This is only a speculation, drawn from a reference in a Greek poem. However, this lacy embroidery has been of interest for centuries. We do know that it was stitched in the Greek islands and in Russia. By the 17th and 18th centuries, it was found in Denmark, Germany and eventually in Britain. Generally pulled thread was used for table linens, curtains and clothing embellishments. Today we stitch projects that may be framed, made into pillows, designed as an elegant Christmas tree skirt or anything that the imagination will allow us to create. Pulled thread work is exciting when it is used on canvas as it adds a different effect and dimension to any piece.
