Paua Shell
by Judy Hendrix

This piece is designed around the paua shell. It was my intention to reach the "how to" of attaching the shell to the canvas and the rest of the design was chosen to compliment the shell. Every shell will fit differently, depending on the size and shape. Each area of the surrounding design is not perfectly symmetrical. This did not concern me because it is possible to "fool the eye" with compensating stitches. Attaching the focal point, in this case the shell, was the most important aspect of this design. Many areas of this design do not meet, but that is not the important part. If you like to come up at 1 and go down at 2 exactly as a chart shows, this project may not be the one for you. However, if you like to try things on your own and enjoy a challenge, jump right in. Maybe this will inspire other students of the art to just try it. After all, what do you have to lose?' You may want to use the stitches I used. I got most of them from Wonderful Stitches by Diane Schultz and Laid Fillings by Jean Taggart. Or, you may want to experiment and select your own stitches, colors and threads depending on the art object you use. In any case, have fun.
