Three Kings
by Joan Thomasson
Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the King, behold there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, saying, "Where is he that is born King of the Jews? We have seen his star in the east and are come to worship him. (Matthew 2:1-2, KJV).
Known from scriptures, myth and legend, the three wise men, sometimes known as the kings Gaspar, Balthazar, and Melchior, have arrived as the first figures in an ongoing Nativity set. Robed in silks and jeweled garments, the kings bring costly gifts to the new King: a small chest of gold, a footed container of frankincense, and a golden um of myrrh.
