When asked what his inspiration was for designing this patriotic sample, Norman said, "In our troubled times, we, as Americans, look for meaning in our lives. In needlepoint it's always easier to work toward the metaphor. In designing this particular piece I found myself looking for metaphors that would mean something to me personally. As I developed the various bands, I searched for the inner meaning I was trying to capture, using fibers and the principles of design as my tools to convey a universal American statement. The only given was that I wanted to work in red, white, and blue, and fade from pastels into the vivid, bold colors of the flag." Norman dedicates the Americana sampler to all the teachers who gave him permission to explore his creative side and develop the needle skills to achieve success. He particularly thanks Kaye Parsons and Elizabeth Bozievich for their support.
